KAJBASOVO STATION
Station name and owner
Kajbasovo Research Station, Tomsk State University, Russia
Location
N57°14'45,38" E84°11'06,17"
Biodiversity and natural environment
The climate is temperate continental, the average annual temperature — 0.8 0C, an average January temperature: -17,1 ° C, an average July temperature: +18,7 ° C, average annual rainfall of 482 mm.
The station is located in the floodland of the Ob River, which is, on the one hand, a huge source of revenue in the global ocean minerals, carbon dioxide and methane, and on the other hand — is a giant geochemical barrier, which regulates the flow of substances and elements from catchment basin in the Ob river. Floodlands are more favorable moisture, heat, mineral nutrition compared to non-inundated areas and, therefore, floodlands are the richest landscapes on the territory of Siberia in terms of productivity and biological diversity. The vegetation cover of the Ob River floodland is represented by different types of large-scale herbs meadows, by swampy meadow phytocenoses and by floodland forests. The fauna is diverse. We can encounted the following species: bear, moose, beaver, muskrat, mink, otter, squirrel, ermine, hare, weasel, fox, lynx, polecat, badger, sable, wolverine. Close to the station a numerous species of birds inhabit: chicken, waterfowl, loons and others similar, gulls, pigeons, daytime predators and others. Some of them — the capercaillie, black grouse, hazel grouse and many geese — are being hunted, others — peregrine falcon, white-tailed eagle, osprey –are included in the Red Book of Russia. In 2011 the black crane has been watched in the vicinity of the station. In the (lakes, ponds..) there are perch, pike, roach, dace, ide, bream, tench, carp and others in the floodplain basins near the station. The number of valuable species of fish: sturgeon, sturgeon, whitefish, peled, white salmon, and others are occurred in the Ob River.
History and facilities
The base is located on the bank of the Ob River. In the years 1977-2001 there were carried out the full-scale soil-geobotanical studies of the soil and vegetation, as well as the researches of physics-chemical and water-physical properties of the soils, which were carried out by the Soil Science Laboratory of the TSU Biology and Biophysics Research Institute and by the TSU Department of Soil Science.
In 2010, the employee of TSU V.Drozdov has built a house for 7 people, sauna and outbuildings on this territory. These structures are the basis of the Station.
In 2015, the Station was equipped with 3 wagons (apartment for 8 people, mobile laboratory and special conference-wagon). Maximum capacity of the houses are 15 people; in the summer season, more than 50 people in the tents.
Communication is carried out by the cellular and shortwave radio. Access to the Internet is via the satellite of "Gazprom" corporation The station is equipped by meteorological complex, by sensors and logger of the soil temperature, of the surface and ground waters levels, of the depth of the snow cover.
At the station, there are boats and outboard motors, snowmobiles, snow-swampmbile "Argo Avenger 8x8», quadrocopter with equipment for aerial photography and thermal shooting, drilling rig to drill the soil to a depth of 25 meters, specialized sampling equipment, refrigeration equipment
Meals are centralized or independent (as agreed)
General research and databases
Research areas: biotic cycle of carbon and accompanying elements in the floodplain; migration of water-soluble substances from the catchment ecosystems to the water bodies; hydrochemical, hydrobiological and ichthyological characteristics of the waters of the middle course of the Ob River; optimizing productivity; ornithology and fauna studies.
There are long-term materials (1977-2001 g) of field investigations of soil and vegetation of the floodplain, physical and physical-chemical properties of the soils, hydro-chemical properties of the water bodies.
In the 30-minute vicinity (17 km) is located a former ichthyological and hydrobiological site "Monatki" in which a long time ichthyologic, hydrobiological and ornithological studies were carrying out.
Human dimension
In 5 BC. – 5AD in the forest zone kulayskaya culture has developed, on the depths of which were formed the nations — Selkup, Khanty and Siberian Tatars which inhabit this territory now. The face of the Tomsk region started to change vary considerably with the migration of Russian population. Russian now makes up the majority of the population.
The leading sector of the economy in the area is agriculture. Plant cultivation and animal husbandry industries are develop stably. But the main wealth of the area in which the station is located — forests, which have significant reserves of wild plants: mushrooms, nuts and berries. The local people actively collect and sell its.
Access
There are 4 direct 4-hours flights from Moscow to Tomsk, by different Airlines: S7 and Transaero from Domodedovo airport, Utair from Vnukovo airport and Aeroflot from Sheremetyevo airport. There is also a direct train Moscow-Tomsk named “Tomich” , along the famous Trans-Siberian Railway. This takes 2 and a half days.
Station can be reached by car from the airport Tomsk (4 hours), as well as by the water transport from the Tomsk river-harbor (3 hours).
